STUDY VISIT GUIDE 

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

FOR INTERNATIONAL DELEGATES

WHO ARE THE VISITS FOR? 

This study visit is for policy makers, school leaders and other senior staff members and educationalists who have a responsibility and/or interest in developing education systems which offer high quality provision for those children and young people who have special educational needs. 

Participants will wish to understand more about the English education system and how it plans for, and works with, children with special educational needs. This will include considering how children both access and engage in their education and how staff are empowered and enabled to support them to do so.

Participants will have an intermediate level of English to maximise participation and learning.

WHAT WILL THE STUDY VISIT FOCUS ON?  

The study visit will focus on:

• Observing and analysing  practice in mainstream schools and special schools

• Policies and procedures that relate to the inclusion of children and young people with special educational needs

• How inclusion is inspected within the English system

• Discussions with UK experts in inclusive practice and with policy makers for guidance & support in making the policy shift towards greater inclusive education including procedures around admission in schools, support systems required and assessment for learning

Visit structure

Please note that this is a sample schedule only – all schools / institutions have not yet been confirmed and are subject to change. 

Monday

 

  • An introduction to the English Education System
  • Using appreciative enquiry and theory of change model to underpin the week’s learning

Visits to:

  • Ofsted to discuss the inspection framework in relation to provision for children and young people with special educational needs
  • The Department for Education to discuss the policies and legislative framework related to inclusion

Tuesday

Both of these schools are “mainstream” schools. These visits will focus therefore on their provision for children with additional needs

Costs and funding

The cost per participant is £2,000

What is included:

  • All sessions and visits, speakers and transport
  • Facilitation
  • Accommodation in 4 star hotel
  • A welcome dinner
  • Evening visits/tours
  • Breakfast and lunch each day

What is not included:

  •   Flight
  •   Visa costs
  • Extra days of accommodation
  •   Personal expenses
  •   Airport transfers- but can be arranged at further cost
