Data Protection Notice

The British Council holds personal data about its UK-Gulf alumni network members. We use this data to process your membership, provide you with information from the British Council and organise our membership activities. It also provides us with management and statistical information about our alumni.

The personal data will be used to run a broad range of alumni activities in the following ways: maintaining records, and other member-only services and benefits such as invitations to networking events and access to professional development courses.

All information (updated as appropriate) will be kept throughout an individual's time as a member.

Personal data will also be available to our employees (both at head office and branch regional offices) and others including UK education institutions, agents and contractors who are associated with the British Council. Please note, we may also share suitably anonymised management and statistical information about our alumni network and its impact with Alumni funding providers (UK Government bodies such as the relevant UK Embassy)

Where, very occasionally, the British Council uses the services of these organisations, they are contractually obliged to process your data on behalf of the alumni network as the data processor and in a secure and confidential manner under our strict instructions.

Under the UK Data Protection Act 1998 the British Council alumni network members also have the right to ask for a copy of the information the British Council holds on them and to request correction of any incorrect information held. By joining the alumni network, I agree to the British Council processing the personal information provided, such as job status, education level, age and gender, and optionally, including sensitive personal information for equal opportunity monitoring purposes, and as outlined in our Data Protection Notice.

I give permission for the British Council to hold the information on its databases and/or the information on my application form to their UK Alumni directory. This directory will be sent to UK education institutions and other members of the Alumni. The purpose of this directory is to promote exchange of information and ideas between alumni members.
