The Welsh National Opera will be performing Giacomo Puccini's Madam Butterfly at Dubai Opera
Puccini’s work often includes a tale of love and tragedy, and Madam Butterfly is no exception; it is possibly one of the saddest tales of unrequited love ever to grace the stage.
Centred around Cio Cio San, a young Japanese girl who falls in love with a careless American naval officer, Pinkerton, the opera is set in 1890s Nagasaki, Japan; each scene in this classic staging looks like a sepia photograph though which we glimpse a vanished world. Based on a short story by John Luther Long, audiences shall see Eastern and Western cultures collide with tragic consequences, delivered with Puccini’s irresistible score featuring the Flower Duet, the Humming Chorus and the beautiful and moving aria Un bel dì.
The WNO celebrate their 70th anniversary, and as part of the UK/UAE Year or Cultural Collaboration, their first performance at Dubai Opera promises to be a must-see event for all music and culture lovers from across the GCC and beyond.
The British Council will also be supporting a programme of learning activities with Welsh National Opera including workshops, master classes and open rehearsals.
